Since moving abroad in 2011, I have worked in several language centers, companies and bilingual schools. In all of these settings, I have seen that the curriculum is heavily based on workbooks and grammar exercises. It was then that I began researching communicative approaches to learning, which are activities based on participation and the actual use of the target language. This way, my students are speaking in Spanish or English from the first class, and using the vocabulary and grammar in a productive, realistic way. They are more interested in the classes and more motivated to learn, as they see greater results in a shorter period of time.
I was working in a hospital in 2010 and taking pre-nursing classes when I realized that I did not actually enjoy the healthcare industry. I set out to travel and find a career, which led me into teaching English in Mexico. I have obtained a TEFL diploma, a BA in English Language Learner Studies and an MA in Teaching and Learning with Technology.
I have lived in Guadalajara, Mexico City, Veracruz, Cancun and San Salvador over the past 6 years. For the past 3 years, I have been teaching and working exclusively online while I travel. I occasionally host communicative training seminars for local English language teachers in Latin America.
